25 Years Ago: A land survey in Westbrook showed that Pilots Point Marina was using part of a residential zone for a commercial boating use, and the Zoning Commission hoped to straighten out the situation.

25 Years Ago: Cromwell Board of Education member Stephen Barber wanted a direct line of communication between the board and the students.

Clinton school nurses contract started; High real estate costs prohibited newcomers from coming into town

25 Years Ago: The Clinton school nurse contract with the Madison Visiting Nurses Association started in September rather than on the original April 1 date.
25 Years Ago: Soaring real estate costs made moving to Essex prohibitive for many young people and how to ease that dilemma was the subject of a public hearing conducted by selectmen.

Portland schools violated code regulations; Middletown looked for ways to solve garbage problem

25 Years Ago: A state report detailing code violations at each of the Portland schools had officials at Valley High and Portland High wondering where to put programs if it couldn't continue in their present location.
25 Years Ago: Although officials who represented Middletown in the Midstate Regional Resource Recovery Authority claimed their desire was to look for other solutions to the then impending garbage crisis was fueled by high tipping fee projections, the six other member towns felt betrayed.

Chester Police Commissioners were not pleased with state police; Steve's Clothing opened in Cromwell

25 Years Ago: Chester Board of Police Commissioners conducted a special meeting to discuss what to do about its relationship with the state police. The police commission voiced dissatisfaction with the services it received from the Westbrook barracks, and claimed constables calls had been ignored.

25 Years Ago:
Steve's Clothing Store went into an anchor space at Cromwell Commons formerly occupied by Everybody's market.

Middlefield Selectmen hired firm; Salem woman charged with reckless driving

25 Years Ago: Middlefield Board of Selectmen voted to hire the firm of Shipman and Goodwin to represent the town’s interests in labor-related issues.

25 Years Ago: A Salem woman was charged with reckless driving after her vehicle struck a picket in the District 1199 strike against the Harbor Crossing Skilled Nursing Care Facility on Ferry Road in Old Saybrook. Phyllis Dionne, 26, of Cungy Road, Salem, was charged in the incident. The picketer was not injured.

Killingworth Planning and Zoning granted town's road design; Two-year-old found in pool is grandniece of celebrity

25 Years Ago: Killingworth Planning and Zoning granted the town’s first scenic rural road designation to a section of North Chestnut Hill Road.

25 Years Ago: The 2-year-old girl, of Westbrook, who was rescued by her mother from an in-ground swimming pool is the grandniece of actress Katharine Hepburn, United Press International reported.

Haddam and Killingworth board of selectmen favored a Region 17 building plan; Two-year-old found face down in pool

25 Years Ago: A joint meeting of the Haddam and Killingworth board of selectmen resulted in a 5-1 consensus in favor of Regional 17 building plan calling for construction of a new elementary school in Killingworth and additions to the existing Haddam and Killingworth elementary schools.

25 Years Ago: A 2-year-old girl, of Westbrook, who was found face down in a neighbor’s pool was reported to be in fair condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital’s intensive care unit. According to a police report, Gillian Hepburn wandered from her own yard at 43 Magna Lane across a dirt driveway into a neighbor’s yard.

Chester Bank reached an all-time high in assets; Psychologist talked to students and parents in Old Saybrook

25 Years Ago: For the first time in Chester Bank’s 115-year history, assets reached $98,178,653, up from the previous high of $79,572,943 set in 1985.

25 Years Ago: A world-renowned psychologist who is noted as a dynamic speaker appeared in Old Saybrook to talk to parents and fellow students about how to help children grow up and become responsible adults.

BOE and East Haddam come to an agreement; East Hampton children who received special ed increased

25 Years Ago: The Board of Education and the East Haddam Education Association reached an agreement for increased teacher salaries under the state’s educational enhancement program.
25 Years Ago: The number of children preschool to second grade who received special education services at Memorial School in East Hampton increased. The principal, Joanne Andershonis, said the school was "attempting to meet the challenge of approximately 15 percent of its population through the special education department."
